Exploring the Digital Liturgies
Description
Over the course of 8 weeks, this class will explore how the internet, and especially social media, undermine Christian relationships by walking through all 8 chapters of Samuel D. James’ book, Digital Liturgies: Rediscovering Christian Wisdom in an Online Age. The goal of this class is to understand how the 5 digital liturgies highlighted in this book create ‘spiritual blockers’ and ‘relational blockers’ that distract and prevent people from living out an embodied experience with one another as disciples of Jesus. Throughout the 8 weeks, we hope to better understand the connection between patterns we see in technology and human behaviors. To facilitate this connection, this class will use portions of Jonanthon Haidt’s book titled The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness to supplement the primary text of Digital Liturgies. Lastly, we hope this class will result in actionable steps to engage in living out an embodied existence where we can live faithfully before Christ, finding direction through Scripture and experiencing peace through God’s design for living in an embodied community.
